With its strength, beauty and timeless New England design, our custom hemlock pergolas transform any space into a welcoming area for gathering, celebrating and enjoying nature.

Pergolas can be attached to your home or mounted to stand on it’s own.
Custom finishes include paint, stain, the Japanese style of shou-sugi ban, and linseed oil.
Crafted from durable Hemlock, this finish can be painted in the color of your choice using a high-quality exterior solid stain, giving your pergola a bold, lasting look.
This finish highlights the natural character of the wood while adding rich color and depth. A premium exterior stain enhances the grain and provides lasting durability and protection from the elements giving your pergola a timeless, hand-crafted look.
This traditional Japanese technique lightly chars the wood surface to create a rich, textured finish that enhances the natural grain while increasing its durability and resistance to the elements.
Highlights and reasons why DownEast Pergolas are professionally crafted.
The idea for DownEast Pergolas started in Bob’s own backyard.
His wife, Melissa, had wanted a pergola for their outdoor space. Using traditional timber post-and-beam construction and drawing on his New England craftsman roots, he created a pergola that was not only beautiful but also built to last.
Raised in the Boston area, Bob grew up in a family of boat builders, engineers, and contractors. He spent his childhood exploring job sites and working on boats in Marblehead Bay. That early foundation instilled in him a passion for building with precision, pride, and creativity.
After serving proudly in the United States Navy, he returned home to pursue his love of design and construction, studying architectural design at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. He went on to establish his own framing company, employing more than 20 people and building custom homes ranging from 3,000 to 15,000 square feet. His work has been showcased in Pella Magazine and Maine Home + Design, reflecting both his expertise and his dedication to excellence.
Bob believes that his work stands as a reflection of both artisanship and pride. His post-and-beam creations are designed both to be attractive and unique, but also to be investments families can enjoy for generations to come. When neighbors and friends saw the pergola that Bob had crafted for his home, they began asking for their own. That’s when Bob realized this could be something truly special—a way to offer families timeless, handcrafted pergolas. And here was the start of DownEast Pergolas.
